Week 3: What’s the Matter?
This week’s song is “What’s the matter?” from my live show in February. It is available on all streaming platforms already :)
I wrote this song several months after somebody broke off a relationship with me in 2017. It all started with a text that said, “Can we talk?” My gut reaction was to write a song about this annoying social norm. Why does, “We need to talk” have to insinuate a break up? And why do people do small talk to begin such conversations? Just get to the point!
I then added real stories from my first stint of online dating the following spring. I agree with Leslie from SNL when she says you should combine all of the online dating apps and call them what’s left.
When you go on so many dates and nothing pans out, you begin to question how you are a part of the problem (if you’re a conscientious person). Sometimes we take that question too far and place all the blame on ourselves.
It’s easier to say I am not good enough and give up, rather than try again and hold onto hope that someone is out there that will respect you and put your needs first.
I’m grateful to say that after 83 first dates and 17 almost dates, I have finally met someone who shares my values, makes me laugh, and is a cool guy. Meeting him has made all my dead-end, disrespectful, and awkward encounters worth it.
Know that if you connect with this song, you’re in my heart and prayers. You deserve to have your desires fulfilled. If anything, use this song to sit in the uncomfortable uncertainty. You can’t know in this moment why something hasn’t worked out just yet. At the very least I hope this song makes you laugh amidst the angst. After all, what’s life without a sense of humor?
